'It was really hard. I love talking,' singer says during '60 Minutes' special.
By James Dinh
Sunday is shaping up to be quite a big day for Adele. Not only is the big-voiced diva up for six awards at the Grammys, but she will also open up about her recent throat surgery in a "60 Minutes" interview, airing on CBS immediately before the awards show.
In a teaser for the TV special, the British songstress speaks with Anderson Cooper about her vocal-cord procedure as well as how she dealt with the post-surgery restrictions. "They put lasers down your throat, cut off the polyp and kind of laser your hemorrhage back together and fix it," Adele wearily told the news anchor.
She was ordered not to speak a word throughout the months of November and December, but the songstress made the best of a not-so-bright situation by using notepads and a text-to-speech cellphone application to communicate with others.
"It was really hard. I love talking," she said.
The singer confessed that the advances in technology made it a little difficult to say what was really on her mind. "I love to swear, and most of them you can't swear on, but I found this one app where you can swear, so I'm still really getting my point across," she said with a smile.
Adele's road to recovery will come full-circle when the singer performs at Sunday night's Grammys. The U.K. songstress recently tweeted her excitement about returning to the stage: "Ima be, Ima be singing at the Grammys. It's been so long I started to forget I was a singer! I can't wait."
Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Don't miss Sway and James Montgomery live from the Grammys red carpet this Sunday, February 12, for a full three hours of mayhem, starting at 5 p.m. ET on MTV.com. And the fun doesn't end Sunday: MTV News has you covered until the Grammy hangover wears off!

Gabriel Aubry was photographed picking up his 3-year-old daughter Nahla from preschool on Wednesday (February 8) in Los Angeles, Calif. Nahla held tight to an oversized, purple stuffed animal as her protective papa carried her to the car.
Last week, A Los Angeles judge ruled in Gabriel's favor in the ongoing custody battle between him and ex Halle Berry. Sources say social workers recommended that no changes be made in the current custody agreement between the co-parents, and the judge is likely to refuse granting Halle's request for a restraining order and/or monitored visitation.

Jeremy Renner's rogue agent is introduced in badass 'Bourne' fashion.
By Kevin P. Sullivan
Jeremy Renner in the "Bourne Legacy" trailer
Photo: Universal Pictures
Jeremy Renner makes his big debut as the latest agent gone rogue in "The Bourne Legacy." Picking up where Matt Damon left off, Renner plays Aaron Cross, an apparent improvement over Jason Bourne.
You'll have to head over to Apple to check out the brand-new trailer, but we have the five key scenes you need to play attention to:
Background
The trailer immediately sets the mood with a little help from the opening credits of Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho." The bars sliding across the screen directly borrow from the horror classic and make things creepy quickly. Jeremy Renner's character gives the name "Kenneth," despite being listed in the credits as Aaron Cross. At the beginning of the trailer, Kenneth/Aaron does not look well. His left eye sags, and the right side of his face is speckled with blood. Immediately, we're questioning who he is and what he's been through, a good thing when introducing a new character to the series.
'Well, That Has Healed Well'
If Aaron is "Treadstone without the inconsistencies," that may imply he is, in fact, stronger than Matt Damon's Jason Bourne. The physician looking at Aaron's hand in the trailer remarks that it had healed well, as if it's something remarkable. Does the removal of those Treadstone inconsistencies include a rapid healing ability?
Introducing Edward Norton
Norton joins the cast as the newest villain in the series, and he makes for a welcome addition. In the trailer, we're introduced to his character, Byer, who tests Aaron to see if he's completely committed to the program, known as "Outcome." Norton leaves little doubt that he's going to make for a worthy opponent in a series known for its intelligent bad guys.
Reintroducing Albert Finney
The introduction of a new main character does not preclude the appearance of some familiar faces. Both Finney and Joan Allen reprise their roles, as Dr. Hirsch and Pamela Landy, respectively. They will be the main through lines to the original trilogy and should help make a little more sense of the new direction for the series.
The Fire Extinguisher
Though it may not ultimately mean that much for the story, a move as inventive as sticking a nail into the end of the fire extinguisher has to be acknowledged.
"The Bourne Legacy" hits theaters August 3.

'Safe House' actor details the 'quick little brawl' he got into in Amsterdam when he was 20.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz
Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington get plenty of action in their new thriller "Safe House," which revolves around Reynolds' character trying to prevent the escape/kidnapping of a dangerous rogue CIA agent (Washington) from the safe house where he works.
When MTV News caught up with Reynolds, we asked him why this story is more intriguing than most action thrillers, as well as whether he's had any real-life fighting experience to bring an extra edge to his character.
"It's such a great character piece," Reynolds said of the film's appeal. "You have two characters that are obviously diametrically opposed but they're sort of marching toward one another as opposed to away from one another. My character is an idealist, [Washington's] is basically a sociopath. They're taking slow, steady steps toward each other, and by the end they're kind of integrating," he explained. "Factor in Denzel Washington, who is one of the greatest living actors today, and [director] Daniel Espinosa, who is a young guy with a fresh take on the genre."
With regard to the hand-to-hand fighting in the film, we asked Reynolds to take us through the last time he was in an actual fight.
"I was in Amsterdam and I was probably about 20," Reynolds recalled. "People can wander around a little affected there, and this guy was on something funny and he just came at me. I don't know what he did but he just came at me. I was 20 years old and it was all a blur. I ended up in this quick little brawl and then it was over. Then the next thing I knew the police were escorting me to the train station and asking me to leave. Not because I was in trouble, but because they thought, 'If this guy sees you again, he's going to stab you.' I was escorted off the city limits."

In the days since Blue's birth, Jay has already released a track, <a href="/news/articles/1677163/beyonce-jay-z-baby-blue-carter-glory-song.jhtml">"Glory,"</a> featuring his baby girl, making her the youngest person ever to appear on a <i>Billboard</i> chart. But for new mom Bey, the road back to headlining tours and music videos starts with getting her enviable physique back in tip-top shape. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:725377.id:1676907" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Beyoncé is known for many things, and her bangin' body is right at the top of the list — hers was the bod that inspired a new word, "Bootylicious," after all. The pop superstar has always been the picture of health and happiness, and to celebrity trainer <a href="http://www.thehollywoodtrainer.com" target="_blank">Jeanette Jenkins</a> — who helped Pink and "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" star Paula Patton get back in shape after their pregnancies — that's half the challenge. "Working out should have been a part of a new mom's regimen before she got pregnant, while she was pregnant, and for the rest of her life," Jenkins told MTV News. "It should be part of your daily life, just like brushing your teeth or combing your hair. It's your internal hygiene. "The goal should not be to lose weight," she added. "The goal should be to live a healthy life, and by working out and eating healthy, you will be happy and the weight will just fall off because you are making healthy choices." So, where should Beyoncé start in her quest to get her fantastic abs and toned legs back? With her doctor, according to Jenkins. "A new mother should first wait until she gets clearance from her doctor, and she can immediately start by making healthy food choices. Once a mother receives clearance from her doctor, then her starting point depends on her fitness level," Jenkins said. "A weekly workout regimen should include all of the components of fitness — cardio, flexibility, muscular strength and muscular endurance — for overall functional health and fitness and for maximum results." Jenkins prescribes a strict training and diet program to her celebrity clients — a four- or five-day-a-week mix of cardio, endurance exercises like circuit training, and strength and flexibility training, including yoga and Pilates — but understands that the outcome will be more successful if the new mom is enjoying the regimen and has realistic expectations. "A new mother has to eat healthy for herself and for her child, but she also has to live and have a good time too," Jenkins said. "From my experience, if you make healthy food choices 80 percent of the time and eat whatever you like 20 percent of the time, then you will have great results. I recommend to my clients to eat healthy Monday through Friday and then let go on the weekend and enjoy yourself." </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:724613.id:1676907" width="240" height="211"></div><p> The trainer also noted that "when people are having a good time, they are more likely to stick to their program." "The goal is to find activities and workouts that you enjoy so that you keep it a part of your life forever. Consistently mix it up, and enjoy working out," she advised. "Try yoga, Pilates, playing in the park with your kids, hiking and kickboxing." She also recommended dancing, which we know Queen B has down to a science. For those not lucky enough to have a personal trainer or unable to sneak away to the gym, Jenkins said, "A walk with the baby in a stroller is good enough. It will help a mother lose their extra baby weight by boosting metabolic rate and increasing caloric expenditure, but more importantly it will give you a boost of happy hormones so you feel great and it cleans out your internal organs, improving your body's pH balance and decreasing your risk of illness and disease." For Jenkins, the keys to a successful workout program are progression and variety. "Training for peak condition is just like training an athlete for peak performance. It has to be done in a healthy progression to maximize results and decrease risk of injury," she added. "For the best weight-loss and toning results, it is important to train the entire body head to toe through all of the components of fitness with an emphasis on using the core at all times. It doesn't matter if she is power walking, doing yoga or cooking in the kitchen, the core needs to be consistently engaged. Always pull your navel to your spine." Beyoncé reportedly maintained a healthy diet throughout <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2011/12/16/jay-z-supports-beyonce-by-going-on-strict-healthy-diet">her pregnancy</a>, and just days before giving birth at New York's Lenox Hill Hospital was spotted <a href="/news/articles/1676647/beyonce-pregnant-new-years.jhtml">looking "amazing"</a> while dining out with her hubby in Brooklyn. If she keeps up her tireless work ethic, there's reason to believe she'll be back in bootylicious shape in no time.</p>

'There is nothing you can do here today that will bring Michael back,' Joe and Katherine Jackson say in a statement read at Conrad Murray hearing.

<P>At Tuesday's (November 29) sentencing hearing for Dr. Conrad Murray — where Michael Jackson's former personal physician received <a href="/news/articles/1675062/conrad-murray-sentence.jhtml">four years in jail for involuntary manslaughter</a> — a statement from Jackson's parents was read in court. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:708788.id:1673923" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "We still look at each other in disbelief: Is it really possible he is gone? It is simply against the natural order of things," Joe and Katherine Jackson said in the statement, read by Jackson family attorney Brian Panish. "We are not here to seek revenge. There is nothing you can do here today that will bring Michael back." <a href="http://www.facebook.com/mtvnews/posts/199210760161755" target="_blank"><b>Do you think Conrad Murray deserved the maximum sentence? Let us know on Facebook.</b></a> Along with Katherine, Michael's siblings LaToya, Jermaine, Randy and Rebbie were also reportedly in attendance at the hearing. In regards to the sentence, the family said in the statement: "We respectfully request you impose a sentence that reminds physicians they cannot sell their services to the highest bidder." The judge agreed, lamenting that due to a new California law to address overcrowding in prisons, he was unable to sentence Murray to state prison. Stating that Murray practiced "horrible medicine" and had "absolutely no remorse," Judge Michael Pastor declined the defense's motion for probation and handed down the stiffest sentence possible — four years — which Murray will most likely serve in a Los Angeles county jail or on home confinement. Upon leaving the courthouse, Michael's brother Jermaine, when asked if the four-year sentence was enough, shook his head and said, "No." Katherine told local TV station KTLA, "Four years is not enough for someone's life. It won't bring him back. But at least he got the maximum, and I thought the judge was very, very fair."</p>

Taking to Europe as he continues to promote his latest movie, Daniel Radcliffe grabbed up the spotlight at the Paris premiere of "The Woman In Black" on Tuesday night (February 7).
The 22-year-old looked snazzy in a grey suit with a yellow tie as he boosted interest in the James Watkins directed horror/thriller ahead of its French release date of March 14th.
The appearance comes as Radcliffe recently voiced his disappointment over "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" receiving only three technical nominations for the Academy Awards.
Venting over the snub to Radio Times, Daniel said, "I don't think the Oscars like commercial films, or kids' films, unless they're directed by Martin Scorsese. I was watching Hugo the other day and going, 'Why is this nominated and we're not?' I was slightly miffed."
He added, "There's a certain amount of snobbery. It's kind of disheartening. I never thought I'd care. But it would've been nice to have some recognition, just for the hours put in."

Complicated voting rules shut out songs by Elton John, Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige and Pink.

<P>Tuesday morning's (January 24) announcement of the 2012 <a href="http://www.mtv.com/movies/oscars">Oscar</a> nominations delivered plenty of surprises. <a href="/news/articles/1677792/oscar-nominations-suprirses-snubs.jhtml">Michael Fassbender ("Shame"), Albert Brooks ("Drive")</a> and Charlize Theron ("Young Adult") were overlooked in the acting categories, while Melissa McCarthy ("Bridesmaids"), Rooney Mara ("The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo") and Max von Sydow ("Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close") scored surprise nominations. But perhaps no category was more head-scratching than Best Original Song. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:666363" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Despite the fact that a <a href="/news/articles/1676284/oscar-2012-best-song-list.jhtml">short list of 39 tracks</a> were eligible for <a href="/news/articles/1677781/academy-award-nominations-2012.jhtml">nomination</a>, only two were named — "<a href="/news/articles/1677837/osar-nomination-man-or-muppet-bret-mckenzie.jhtml">Man or Muppet</a>" from "The Muppets" and "Real in Rio" from "Rio" — leaving tunes from Elton John and Lady Gaga, Pink, will.i.am, Zooey Deschanel, Elvis Costello and Mary J. Blige shut out of the competition. Many Oscar-watchers were left wondering why the Academy would opt away from the traditional five contenders in favor of just two little-heard songs. Well, a closer look at the Oscar rule book shows it's probably less a case of choosing to nominate only two songs than it is simply a case of a single song scoring enough points to secure a nod, and then bringing its closest competition along for the ride. Oscar nominations are arrived at using a <i>very</i> complicated weighted system in which members of the Academy, voting exclusively for members of their own branch (i.e. actors chose the acting nominees, directors vote for directors, etc.), rank contenders in order of preference. From there, a "magic number" is determined that relies on the number of ballots cast for a category, along with a specific mathematical equation. Ballots are tallied and contenders are eliminated through several rounds in a process that tabulates factors like first-place mentions and so on. Once a contender reaches the magic number, they are an Oscar nominee. (The folks over at <i>EW</i>'s <a href="http://popwatch.ew.com/2008/01/09/academy-awards" target="_blank">PopWatch</a> break down the selection steps in great detail.) </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:620119" width="240" height="211"></div><p> So this is how the nominees are determined — with one exception: Best Original Song. In 2009, when the Academy opted to up the number of Best Picture nominees to 10 (the voting body has since altered that number), it also changed the rules for Best Original Song. As <a href="http://www.billboard.com/news/oscar-analysis-what-happened-to-best-original-1005966952.story#/news/oscar-analysis-what-happened-to-best-original-1005966952.story" target="_blank"><i>Billboard</i></a> points out, members of the Academy's music branch now "assign each song a numerical score between 1 and 10, and if no song receives an average of more than 8.25, there are no nominees. If only one song tops the threshold, as clearly happened here, the next highest vote getter secures a nomination as well." This year's Best Original Song category boils down to this: either Bret McKenzie's "Man or Muppet" or "Real in Rio" by songwriting trio Sergio Mendes, Carlinhos Brown and Siedah Garrett secured a score of 8.25 or better, earning a nomination and pulling the #2 vote-getter into the fray. Simply put, members of the music branch didn't award any other song, including John and Gaga's duet "Hello Hello" or Blige's "The Help" track "Living Proof," a score high enough to secure a nomination. But lest you think that this means the category is all but locked, think again. While selecting the Oscar nominees is an intensely mathematical process, picking the winners is much easier. Once the nominations are decided, every member of the Academy can vote in each category and the nominee that receives the most votes wins. Easy enough. And since actors are the largest voting block of the Academy— and would have had nothing to do with the tracks selected to contend for Best Original Song — it's anyone's game. <b>See the complete list of <a href="/news/articles/1677781/academy-award-nominations-2012.jhtml">Academy Awards Nominations</a>.</b></p>

Marvel's heroes may have rocked the Super Bowl, but we pit them against Batman in The Weekly Rising.
By Kevin P. Sullivan
"The Dark Knight Rises" movie poster
Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures
The Super Bowl didn't just mean victory for Giants fans. It represented a victory for comic book fans everywhere, because after years of waiting, we got to see the Avengers assembled. We can finally grasp what the event we've been waiting for will look like, and it rocked.
What does this have to do with Batman and the upcoming "Dark Knight Rises," you may ask? Well, a few weeks ago, we held a little tournament call MTV Movie Brawl, and the two biggest superhero movies of the summer faced off in the first round. Batman won by a narrow but significant margin, leaving little doubt about which movie fans want more.
The win for "The Dark Knight Rises" could have been predicted, considering that Warner Bros. had already released two trailers and a prologue and that the previous film in the series was literally the biggest superhero movie of all time. But now that "The Avengers" has the benefit of a second and arguably better trailer, how do the two previews stack up?
The Atmosphere
The Marvel Universe movies have never been deathly serious. Sarcasm and humor underline most of the action. The trailer for "The Avengers" takes the same approach, avoiding the grave tone of Christopher Nolan's Gotham and the "Dark Knight Rises" trailer. Nolan established a concrete look and feel for his Batman movies, and the trailer does its job to get that across. Both feel true to what fans expect from the respective franchises, so neither can really get the edge here.
The Voice-Over
Both short but equally sweet, the trailers start off with voice-over narrations from supporting characters in the series, Michael Caine's Alfred and Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury. They set the stage for the rest of the action in the trailer and solidly ground the new footage in the tradition of the previous films. Our vote goes to Michael Caine for a few reasons. He gets the benefit of a young boy creepily singing the national anthem, yes, but it's more than that. Alfred has done so much more to be a beloved character. Fury just shows up at the end to tease awesome stuff you'll have to wait years for. Alfred wins.
The Villain
"The Avengers" and "The Dark Knight Rises" take two very different approaches to handling their villains. Bane stands front and center, blowing up a stadium without any notion of subtlety. The alien invaders from "The Avengers" remain hidden, their true identities one of the film's greatest mysteries. The benefit of not hiding who you are is that you get to do a lot more intimidating stuff in the trailer. Bane throws down while the aliens can't stay onscreen long enough to get any action in. Victory goes to Bane.
The Action
We've dissected each aspect of the "Dark Knight Rises" trailer more times than we care to recalled, but a lot of it depends on how you feel about stadium demolition. "The Avengers" combines the best action bits from the previous movies and says, "Here, remember all this cool stuff? Now you get it in one movie." But who will ever admit to not thinking that Iron Man always looks so freaking cool when he's flying? It's awesome every time.
The Big Shot
As much as we love Batman, you cannot compete with that circle shot of the entire "Avengers" assembling. You cannot. Yes, the Bat looks great and will make for great eye candy when "The Dark Knight Rises" hits, but that single shot from the "Avengers" trailer justified that movie's existence in a matter of seconds. It was fanboy fantasies projected directly onto a screen.
By our scientific calculations, that puts "The Avengers" and "The Dark Knight Rises" in a dead heat. You know why? Because they both look incredible, and everyone in the world will see both.
Check out everything we've got on "Marvel's The Avengers" and "The Dark Knight Rises." For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com.
